Snowdonia can truly be said to be a landscape shaped by the contrasting forces of fire and ice. This course visits the site of a disappearing ocean and observes sediments laid down in an ocean basin. We will see lavas produced both on the sea bed and as a result of erupting volcanos. Add to this the contortions caused by mountain building, widespread mineralisation, and massive glaciation and the diversity of SnowdoniaÝs geological past becomes apparent.

In Snowdonia, rocks are exposed ranging in age from Pre-Cambrian to Upper Palaeozoic. Recent glaciations have left a legacy of classic glacial landforms. The course will involve field examination of classic rock sequences and landforms set amidst some of the most spectacular scenery in Britain. Evening discussions will set the dayÝs observations in context.

Paul Gannon is the recent author of Snowdonia: A Hill walker's guide to the geology and scenery, one of number of books he has written as part of the UK 'Rock Trails' series. Paul is a science and technology writer, based in Llanberis, Snowdonia and is a keen hillwalker.
