Additional Course Information
A practical weekend course for those contemplating beekeeping and novices. We examine the place of honeybees in the natural environment, their importance in food production and their relation with humans through the development of apiculture. The majority of the weekend shall be spent considering the equipment required to start keeping bees, unveiling the secrets of life inside the hive and learning about site selection and caring for a small apiary. The basic processing of honey bee products and discovering the diversity of honey through sampling different varieties will show off the advantages of beekeeping as a hobby.
By the end of the course participants will have practical experience of handling honey bees and knowledge enabling them to start keeping a few hives. In addition information on further developing skills and the whereabouts to obtain further help and support shall be available.
Orlando Clarke has ten years experience of urban beekeeping in London and recently established rural apiaries in North Essex. His awareness of the challenges presented by location has led to numerous appearances in the media and on television. Orlando practices low input beekeeping preferring non-chemical methods and breeding for hardiness.
