Soil Invertebrates

Participants will be introduced to the major groups of invertebrates likely to be found in soils. The course will begin by giving a general overview of British soil environments and how to collect and identify the different invertebrate groups therein. This will be followed by an in-depth view of the identification of two of the major soil invertebrate groups; earthworms and myriapods (centipedes and millipedes).
Paul Eggleton is the Head of the Soil Biodiversity Group in the Entomology Department, Natural History Museum, undertaking research into the factors influencing the distribution of invertebrates within soils. Emma Sherlock is the Curator of Annelids in the Zoology Department, Natural History Museum and the President of the newly established Earthworm Society of Britain. Kelly Inward is a research assistant working within the Soil Biodiversity group, with particular expertise in British ants and millipedes.
