The course begins after dinner (served @ 7.30pm) on the 31st and ends after breakfast (served @ 8.30am) on the 3rd, though people can leave at the end of the evening session on the 2nd if they prefer as there will be no actual teaching on the 3rd. On the 1st we will visit local sites with a range of different heathland types. We will classify their vegetation using the National Vegetation Classification (NVC). In doing so, we will consider the ecology of the various heathland types and their place in a wider British context. There will also be indoor sessions on the evenings of 31st, 2nd and 1st. The NVC teaching will make use of publications such as volume 2 (mires and heaths) of the NVC series. However, it will not be based strictly around the collection and analysis of quadrat; it will be more general, considering different approaches to vegetation classification.

Ben Averis is a consultant botanist who has been using the NVC for 21 years. He is a co-author of an illustrated Guide to British Upland Vegetation (JNCC 2004).
