This short sculpture course is for anyone interested in gaining a better understanding of sculpture and is suitable for people of all abilities, including beginners. Through the use of clay you will have the opportunity to explore both the technique of "additive/building work" and "removing/carving". You will be encouraged to work in a way that allows the natural development of your work.
There will be no use of armatures and/or any other restrictive practises instead there will be a little-known method of building using structural clay "elements". This will allow you to work more easily and explore your own creativity. There will also be some drawing work, (NO drawing skills are necessary), around the human form, as well as going into the environment and improving observational skills of the natural world - noting its rhythms and beauty.
This course will help with improving observational skills, deeper thought and sensitivity and increasing awareness and understanding of form and mass. You will work towards completing 1 or 2 clay sculptures ready for kiln firing. Results can be both interesting and exciting but more importantly there should be a feeling of opening up and learning.
Suggested Program will be:
Friday: Introductions and discussion
Sat am: Gentle silent walk before clay removing/carving interspersed with group and
individual discussion
Sat pm: Communal making of clay elements for all group to use before further work on
clay "cubes"
A film will be shown in the evening followed by discussion
Sun am: Group movement and drawing before starting work on own clay "elements"
Sun pm: Gentle walk and/or drawing before further work on elements
After supper group discussion - looking at past work of participants and/or
quiet time on own/optional film show
Mon am: Gentle stretch and optional silent walk before finishing either or both
sculptures - "cube" and "elements"
