This course led by Natural History Museum palaeontologists will give participants the skills to build their own fossil collection, collect data on the specimens, understand the physical conditions under which the collection should be kept, and gain an insight into the conditions and treatments required for different types of specimens. Using local sites and fossils this residential course is suitable for those wishing to start or maintain and develop an existing collection. The course will include opportunities to collect from the Lower Lias near Lyme Regis and Charmouth. Participants will be encouraged to discuss the content of their own collections and to use these as the basis of the curatorial and collections management issues discussed, they will be guided towards high quality curatorial techniques, data management, and general collections management.

Dr Paul Taylor is a researcher in the Department of Palaeontology at the Natural History Museum, specializing in bryozoans and other invertebrates. With over 35 years experience as a palaeontologist, he is the author of three popular books on fossils and over 250 articles. Additional interests are in palaeoecology and the folklore of fossils.

Dr Zerina Johanson is curator/researcher of Fossil Fishes in the Palaeontology Department in the Natural History Museum. Zerina specializes in the study of Devonian fishes, but is also interested in the development of living fishes, particularly the Queensland lungfish, a close relative to land vertebrates or tetrapods. Zerina has experienced natural history collections as both a researcher and curator, and uses this to improve and develop the NHM fossil fish collection.
