  Professional Development Course.
Course accredited by The University of Birmingham (Taught Masters Programme)

This course is designed to help students in developing higher level field entomology skills and associated laboratory and microscope skills to identify those invertebrate groups that have proved challenging such as millipedes and spiders. There will be a mixture of fieldwork with guidance on field collection techniques appropriate to each group, laboratory sessions, plus talks on identification, use of keys and microscopy.

Identification will go to species level where possible and ensure most organisms found can be identified to family level. This course is part of the MSc in Biological Recording run by the University of Birmingham.

Paul Lee is an ecological consultant. He undertakes invertebrate based site assessment projects for national conservation bodies, Wildlife Trusts and many other organisations from civil engineering companies to national park authorities.

Masters Modules with the FSC
The MSc Biological Recording: Collection and Management is run by the University of Birmingham’s School of Biosciences in partnership with FSC. It is part time and mainly at weekends.

The whole programme is designed to give students the ability to use and collect biological records and subject them to critical analysis. It has helped many students to gain new employment or promotion in jobs in ecological and biological recording, especially those with an emphasis on high quality field skills and record interpretation. There are a number of induction/information days to which prospective students and or employers are welcome. The courses listed below are a small part of the two year taught programme. They are available to FSC customers as stand alone modules to help them to enhance their academic and theoretical understanding of the topics covered. It is expected that course members will have identification skills and some experience of field recording.
