This practical, vocational course focuses on techniques for surveying and monitoring selected groups of animals and plants for the analysis of habitat and communities, including Phase 1 and 2 surveys and the National Vegetation Classification. Day topics are likely to include: red grouse management, butterfly census and diversity indices. The emphasis will be on evaluating the methodologies and examining the financial implications of site monitoring and surveying thus helping to improve the understanding for all currently involved or wishing to be employed in site management for conservation. This course is designed for the Birkbeck University of London MSc in Countryside Management as a stand alone module and is suitable for others who wish to study at this level.
Sue Townsend is Head of Centre at Preston Montford. As an experienced course director for university ecology programmes, she has designed this course in conjunction with Birkbeck College. She is experienced in the identification, data analysis and planning skills necessary for monitoring and surveying.
