In this course you will learn the important analytical methods that underpin all data handling. Starting witht he unerstanding of the importance of the scientific hypothesis and leading onto data collection and ways to re-organise numbers to best effect . This will lead into frequesncy distributions, summary statistics (averages) and measures of data spread before tacklng some basic statistical tests and presenting data graphically. The course will be computer based and cover the use of spreadsheets. Computers will be available throughout.

Dr Mark Gardener is a freelance biologists and tutor and works for the Open University and the University of Birmingham. He has a lifetime interest in biology and data analysis and teaches on both residential schools and distance learning programmes. He has supported students in the design and analysis of their research and has written educational software to help understand and apply statistics to their data for both ongoing research projects and academic dissertations.
