Slapton is an ideal location for the study of coastal plants. Famous for the unique shingle beach of Slapton Sands and for the freshwater lake of Slapton Ley, it is also in easy reach of the cliffs of Start Point and the sand dunes and salt marshes of the Avon Estuary.

This plant identification course is aimed at amateurs and professionals. It will enable you to become familiar with the identification, ecology and natural history of a wide range of coastal plants, including less familiar grous such as the grasses, sedges and rushes. During the course we will also discuss the ecology and management of the main coastal habitats of shingle, salt marsh, sand dune and sea cliffs. Help and advice will be given on plant identification aids and the use of keys and there will be plenty of opportunities for keen photographers. In common with many parts of Britain, the South Devon coast is undergoing changes and the possible effects of these on the vegetation will be considered. This course will involve walking along sea cliffs.

David Streeter is Reader in Ecology at the University of Sussex and a past chairman of the Conservation Committee of the Botanical Society of the British Isles. He has had a long association with Slapton Ley.
