A workshop-style course on how to identify lichens, and also the fungi that are obligately associated with them, in the field and under the microscope. Ideal for those with enthusiasm and a little knowledge wishing to increase their confidence and learn more. Advantage will be taken of the rich material of lichens and lichenicolous fungi present in Slapton and in its vicinity, including visits to different types of woodland, rocky coastal sites, and upland localities on Dartmoor. The practical identification work will involve the use of keys, including some yet unplublished, and be supplemented by PowerPoint presentations. Participants are encouraged to bring along specimens for study, and if possible should come armed with "The Lichens of Great Britain and Ireland" (Smith et al. 2009).

Professor David L Hawksworth CBE (Universidad Complutense de Madrid and The Natural History Museum, London) is a former President of the British Lichen and Mycological Societies. He is the author of numerous publications on lichens and associated fungi, and ran his first course at Slapton in 1969.
