The vegetation of southern Dartmoor provides a wide range of plant communities typical of the upland areas of south-west England. Particular consideration will be given to the influence of environmental and management factors on the ecology and biogeography of the communities and on the relationships between them. The course will cover the history and development of the NVC, touch on the general principles of plant community classification and illustrate some of the uses of the present system. Participants will be introduced to the field methodology of the NVC and a particular emphasis will be placed on the collection of good quality comprehensive data, including bryophytes and macro-lichens. NVC keys and computer software will be used to classify the field data and the advantages and disadvantages of the system discussed.

David Streeter is Reader in Ecology at the University of Sussex where he designed and runs the post-graduate MSc course in Biodiversity Survey. He has had a long association with Slapton Ley.
