Field Studies Council: Bringing Environmental Understanding to All

1979 Tom Tew, Lincolnshire - FSC Malham Tarn

A school field trip and 30 years later I was Natural England's Chief Scientist.

A school field trip - I was a London-born teenager that wanted to 'engage' with the natural world but didn't know how to or anyone else that did. A week at Malham measuring freshwater snails was cold and wet but I discovered two things
a) orange squash was nice drunk hot and
b) there were people who cared about the environment, and studied it carefully - and got paid for doing so.
Ten years later I was a PhD student at Oxford, 20 years later I too was being paid to care for the environment, and 30 years later I was Natural England's Chief Scientist.
And I still drink my orange squash hot when it's cold outside...
