29/02/08 A day in the life of the Project Officer! Sometimes the BTP reaches more widely than our local area and today saw me head south to London for a meeting to examine biological recording and volunteer recorders in a national context. The meeting was organised by the National Biodiversity Network (NBN) and is a forum for a number of biological recording groups and societies, as well as government agencies and charities to discuss ways of improving access to resources, training and all manner of related issues. The forum is keen to hear from volunteer recorders and we are feeding in some of the information regarding the various questionnaires that some of you have been kind enough to fill in for us during 2007. The day was a long one and involved several hours train travel but was ultimately enjoyable. More than anything it showed how important it is for us to be connected, and up to date with what is going on elsewhere, but also it allows us to set the agenda.

24/02/08 1st Birthday Bash! Today saw us celebrate the first anniversary of the Biodiversity Training Project at Preston Montford with volunteer recorders taking part in discussions and listening to presentations on a range of biological recording subjects as diverse at the ecology of our dragonflies to plans for a virtual Local Records Centre in the county. Close to fifty recorders took part in the day long event near Shrewsbury and as well as celebrating the Project and its’ first year, vital information that will contribute towards the shaping of the Project was gathered. Even at this incredibly early stage the success of this event has persuaded us to repeat it again in 2009 with some practical outdoor biological recording sessions on offer to volunteer recorders.

03/01/08 Happy New Year! I would like to wish everyone a happy and healthy 2008! I am just putting the finishing touches to the 2008 events and expect to have them finalised by the end of January. Details will appear here on this site as well as in a newsletter that can be emailed, linked to, or you can get a good old-fashioned paper copy.

29/11/07 That’s all folks (for this year)! Thank you to everyone who has taken part in our hugely successful events programme during 2007. We have had the pleasure of having 501 individual participants on our courses to date – a fantastic achievement and a testament to all the tutors and venues who have worked with us to date. I am currently busily working putting together the 2008 event list which shall comprise around 30 public events with the main focus being the plants, insects and animals of grassland habitats, details will appear on this website close to the launch date of February 24th 2008. On that day we shall be celebrating the Project’s 1st birthday with a day long event at Preston Montford Field Centre, more details to follow soon.

The project is supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Field Studies Council.
