Field Studies Council: Bringing Environmental Understanding to All

Conference Venue

FSC Millport is the perfect choice for your conference group, away from the hustle and bustle of the city yet easily accessible by public transport and by car. We offer a range of modern, high-standard facilities and a friendly service with a smile. The stunning settings of FSC Millport are only one hour from Glasgow Central by public transport or by car.

Our facilities consist of a spacious dining room, 64 twin bedded, en-suite rooms overlooking the Clyde, and bright and spacious conference rooms to suit groups of any size. We also have break rooms and an on-site licenced bar. Over £4 million were invested in new facilities between 2015 and 2016. All the existing facilities of the Marine Biological Station, which opened in 1897, were upgraded, and new accommodation block and a new conference building were built. The results is a site that is brimming with history but at the same time offers all modern comforts.

Why choose FSC Millport for your conference?

-          Modern, clean and high-standard facilities with a small price tag.

-          Stunning location with great views and amazing wildlife living around the centre.

-          Comfortable accommodation in en-suite, twin rooms.

-          Conference rooms that can be set up as required.

-          Accessibility: Cumbrae is “the most accessible of the Scottish Isles” and it’s easy to tell why. Take the train from Glasgow, and in about one hour you will be on our front door. There’s a regular bus service that stops on our doorstep.

-          No frills service.

-          Great catering options cooked by our passionate chefs.

-          We are a green business which aims to have as little environmental impact as possible: we have installed a carbon neutral heating system, a green roof, solar panels and a small wind turbine on site.

-          The FSC is a charity which reinvest part of its profit into bursary schemes that help students from deprived areas attend an FSC course in Biology, Geography or Natural History. By choosing to host your conference at FSC Millport, you contribute to these schemes which will help more young people experience the environment first-hand.

"The venue was perfect for all our needs. The island location was a real winner. The compactness and campus feel was particularly valued, as was the use of the FSC boat and local bike hire. The staff, all of whom were engaged to some degree in servicing our needs, were magnificent. The Centre is very well suited to such a conference, with 60-80 delegates all staying on-site."

Catering

We cater to suit all requirements. We source local produce wherever possible, and offer seasonal, hearty meals homemade by our passionate chefs. Unlike most conference centres, seconds are usually available. We can offer any type of meal: cooked and continental breakfast, cold buffets, soup and sandwich lunches, 2 course dinners and more elaborated conference-style meals. Please contact us to discuss your requirements. We always have vegetarian options available and can cater for most diets as long as appropriate advance notice is given.

FSC Millport is known for its excellent, home made baking. Freshly baked cakes will be available every day from 3pm.

Accommodation

Millport _DSC_2683_L

We offer comfortable accommodation in the fantastic settings of the Isle of Cumbrae, only an eight minute ferry trip from the mainland in Largs. Our modern, clean rooms have en-suite bathrooms, desk, chairs, wardrobe and are of much higher standard than our price tag would suggest! The views are something to write home about: half of our rooms face the Firth of Clyde and from some of them you can even see the Isle of Arran. We have a limited number of disabled access rooms with walk-in showers, so please let us know if you require one of them.

We also have a very small number of triple rooms.

Conference Rooms

 Millport Conference

We have a variety of conference rooms to accommodate groups of different size and scope. Our lecture theatre is the largest room of our facilities, which can hold up to 130 people. This is a classic lecture theatre that can be set to suit your needs. Our second largest room, the Ark, is in the historic Robertson building: it is an airy, well-lit room with a lot of space, which makes it ideal if you're looking for a venue with some character.

All rooms have a computer and a smartboard and while on site our technician will be available for help for the duration of your visit.

Internet and IT facilities

FSC Millport recently installed super-fast fibre optic internet connection, which is accessible from common areas and all rooms. We operate a fair usage policy so we ask you not to download large files or stream films or tv while on site.

Other facilities

There is an on-site licensed bar with guest lounge and TV (over 18s only). We offer a small range of local beers, ales and wines, such as Isle of Arran blonde and Belhaven’s 80 Shillings. Larger groups can access more of our social spaces, which have a pool table and a television.

FSC Millport has a large on-site parking and also hosts Robertson Museum and Aquarium, which showcases the wildlife of the Clyde and the works of the Cumbrae Naturalist who founded the Marine Station in 1897.

The Town of Millport

Millport Town

The picturesque town of Millport, a favourite holiday resort for generations, is only a 10 minute walk away (less than 1 mile) from our centre. Millport has local shops and amenities, including five pubs, a small supermarket, bike hire shops, a laundrette and a bank with cash machine. Cycle around the island (it only takes one hour) or visit the Ritz Café for a 1950s throwback.

How to reach us

From the town of Largs (which can be reached from Glasgow in 45 minutes, either by train or by car) make your way to the seafront where the ferry terminal is located. The ferry to Cumbrae (£3.20 return ticket) runs every 15 minutes in summer and every 30 minutes in winter, and it takes eight minutes to get you to the Island. Once the island a bus service (£3.30 return) meets every ferry and drops you off outside the centre, which is at the start of the Millport town 30mph zone. Alternatively, take your car on the ferry (£12.20 return). Once on the Island turn left on the main coastal road. Keep on it for about 3 miles, until you get to the Millport 30mph speed limit area. FSC Millport is the set of building on your right hand side.
