Field Studies Council: Bringing Environmental Understanding to All

Headlines

At present the A379 along Slapton Sands (between Slapton and Strete Gate) is closed due to the recent extreme weather and erosion associated with Storm Emma, resulting in the loss of a section of the road. Slapton Ley Field Centre remains open and we are able to provide a good range of field sites for you visit however the road closure does impact on access to the centre for coaches.

We advise that if you are travelling to or from the field centre by coach to please ensure that you discuss a suitable route with field centre staff prior to your visit. The road from Torcross to Slapton Turn remains,  and some routes may be modified to access fieldwork sites.

We have carried out site visits to determine access and update risk assessments along the South West Coastal Path and road routes along Start Bay. From this adaptations to coastal fieldwork have been made to allow modified, safe and very topical coastal fieldwork to still take place. We hope you will work with us during this time of interesting coastal change to provide some amazing case studies on this dynamic coastline for your group.

MP Dr Wollaston has successfully secured a £2.5 million repair fund for the A379 Slapton Line from the government after raising the issue of the damaged road directly with Chris Grayling, the Secretary of State for Transport and then with the PM at Prime Minister’s Questions.

Updates on the road can be found on the Slapton Line website: http://www.slaptonline.org/.
