Exemplar Work
Here is a range of exemplar work that has been completed at Slapton Ley Field Centre. This demonstrates the fieldwork that is completed for different specifications and shows the work achieved by students of a range of ages and abilities in a very short time.
GCSE Geography Controlled Assessments (City of London
School)
Students visit the centre to complete GCSE Geography controlled
assessments, students field sketch Start Bay from Slapton Sands to
show the coastal features, processes and management.
GCSE Geography Controlled Assessments (Belgrave
School)
Students visit the centre to complete GCSE Geography controlled
assessments, investigating long shore drift in Start Bay. Students
use GIS and local maps to identify their fieldwork locations, and
to research background information.
GCSE Geography (Forest School)
Students investigating long shore drift in Start Bay presenting
methods using a summary table to show how they measured Beach
Profiles. The data was then presented using graphs.
AS Level OCR Geography: Rivers and Flooding (Dr
Challoner's Grammar School )
Students investigating River Environments, measure changes in
river variables along the River Harbourne. Follow up activities
include summarizing the methods and using Spearman's Rank
Correlation to investigate relationships between variables.
Students visit the village of Harbertonford to assess a range of
flood defence schemes. They use GIS to map flood risk within the
area, and quantified the effectiveness of each flood defence using
cost benefit analysis.
AS Level AQA Geography: Flooding (Hampton
School)
Students visit the village of Harbertonford to collect case study
information for a range of flood defences. They use background
information such as local topography, land use and geology maps and
rainfall data to answer an exam question about why the area is at
risk from flooding.
AS Level Edexcel Geography: Rural Villages (St Albans
School)
Students investigating rural rebranding in the South Hams carry
out data collection at a local farm shop and in Dartmouth. In a
short session students are encouraged to identify potential data
presentation techniques that could be used for a range of data.
Students present the findings, using appropriate methods of data
presentation, and this was peer assessed to suggest
improvements.
AS Level Edexcel Geography: Urban Geography (New Hall
School)
Students investigating urban rebranding in Plymouth visited
different areas within the city to use novel ways of assessing the
area, the dominant smells were identified at each location. Data
collected was presented in Google Earth using modified pins.
