FSC Environmental Education

Project Title: Educational Television Programmes

Countries: Uzbekistan

Funder: The British Council

Project Summary

This is a project to add one programme on environmental issues to the successful British Council Educational television series recently produced with support from the FCO. The thirty minute environmental programme would follow a similar format and will be presented by young people for young people. The British Council will work with the recently established "Learning for Life" Citizenship Education Centre in Tashkent and will be supported by a UK based Environmental Education NGO with experience of working in Uzbekistan - Field Studies Council. The video will be supported by learning resources.

Purpose of the Programme

The target group for the programme will be young people aged 14-18, teachers and parents. The purpose of the programme will be to -

  • Create a team of Young Environment Reporters - young people with the skills to communicate and report environmental issues to young people.
  • Develop an young people's understanding of the key environmental issues facing Uzbekistan
  • Look at practical ways in which young people can work towards helping to create solutions to these problems.

Content and Approach of the Programme

Although the programme will be planned by the young people themselves it is envisaged that the Young Environment Reporters Team will

  • talk to groups of young people about environmental problems
  • visit places both in Tashkent and the region where there are environmental problems to be seen - too much solid waste produced, energy being wasted, wasted being wasted, and so on.
  • give young people the facts about these issues - perhaps comparing Uzbekistan with other countries in the region and the world
  • Look at the relationship between these issues and the quality of life
  • Talk to people about why these problems happen
  • Discuss with people and suggest ways in which the problems can be tackled and the role young people can play.
  • Interview decision makers such as the Minister of Environment.
