A Brief History of British Woodlands

The course is a general introduction to the history of woodland and woodland management in Britain. Most of the day will be in the field using areas of Epping Forest and surrounding countryside looking at examples of current practice and evidence of what has happened in the past.

Topics include: the first colonisers post last ice-age and primary succession/the development and form of the 'wildwood'/the effect of humans from earliest settlers to intensive management/Industrial Revolution, lack of management and decline of woodlands/introductions and invasive species/Ancient semi-natural woodland and clues to ancient woodland.

This course runs from 09.30 to 17.00 and price includes a free FSC guide Tree Name Trail.

Please bring a packed lunch and transport is required to field sites.

Andy Deane is a lecturer in Arboriculture and Countryside Management. He is also a Lantra registered assessor/trainer in chainsaw and related activities with many years 'hands-on' experience in woodland management.
