Field Studies Council: Bringing Environmental Understanding to All

Advanced British Amphibians

  • Non-Resident: £49

This course is designed for those wishing to examine the ecology, identification and surveying of British amphibian species at an advanced level. Participants will be expected to have a basic knowledge of amphibians and surveying techniques. The course is designed to extend the skill of land managers and conservation practitioners.

This course will run 09.00 to 16.00 and includes lunch at a local public house. There is an optional session at 08.00 to check amphibian traps. Please arrive at the earlier time if you wish to particpate.

There is another optional survey from 19.00 - 20.30 on the 10th March. Participants are welcome to attend; bring a torch. There is no extra charge; please contact the Centre to reserve a place.

This course is being run early in the season to allow participants to use skills learnt throughout the rest of the season. Although amphibians are active at this time of year, we are unable to make any guarantees as to the number of amphibian species we may survey during the course.

Laurence Jarvis is a graduate in Zoology and part of the Education Team at Epping Forest Field Centre. He has a strong interest and knowledge of many aspects of amphibian ecology, carries out surveying of amphibians and is currently studying part-time for a PhD on the ecology of the great crested newt.
