Hedgerows have always played an important role in our landscape, creating effective aesthetically pleasing boundaries and providing a valuable wildlife resource. These intricate patterns which have characterised the landscape for centuries are gradually vanishing. This two day course will cover the history, ecology and management of hedgerows and provide a sound knowledge of the techniques required for hedgelaying, using traditional tools and materials.
Participants are advised to bring suitable outdoor clothing and stout footwear. Not essential, but if you'd like to, bring along bill hooks, axes and/or pruning saw on Day one for Peter to assess.
This hedgelaying course runs from 09.30 to 16.00 on both days and includes lunch at a local public house on the first day.
A packed lunch and transport to the field site is required for the Day two.
Peter Vaughan is a committee member of the Epping Forest Conservation Volunteers and has been involved in woodland management for the past 20 years, with a particular interest in hedgelaying. He is a member of the National Hedgelaying Society and also the South of England Hedgelaying Society and has competed in many competitions both locally and nationally.
