Field Studies Council: Bringing Environmental Understanding to All

Bird Identification

Join Steve Piotrowski and learn how to identify Britain's birds with confidence. These courses cover the basics of identifying birds by sight and progress during your stay to identifying the commoner species by songs and calls. Some time is spent in the classroom but much of the course will be spent exploring the surrounding areas and each venue is chosen for its wide range and diversity of species likely to be encountered. Please note, the Flatford Mill course is likely to encounter scarcer species, and familiar species in more challenging plumages (winter or juvenile) so may also appeal to intermediate/advanced level birdwatchers.
As well as increasing your confidence in bird identification you will also discover the range of BTO surveys that you can take part in. The BTO is an independent charity involved in the long-term monitoring of UK birds and sets the standard worldwide for understanding the effects of environmental change on wildlife. Over 40,000 volunteer birdwatchers, in partnership with professional research scientists, take part in BTO surveys, the results of which feed directly into conservation. We have a broad range of surveys for volunteers to participate in, from weekly counting of garden birds, through monthly winter counts of waterbirds, and sampling of breeding birds across the UK.

Each course is run by an experienced BTO Trainer. This Flatford Mill weekend will be led by Steve Piotrowski, one of the most experienced birders in Suffolk.
