This course is designed for those with professional and strong amateur interests in coastal areas. It will concentrate on the wildlife and habitats of 'soft 'coastlines (estuaries, sand dunes, salt marshes and soft cliffs) and will cover features, processes, wildlife communities and the legal and other mechanisms which underpin active conservation management.
Field excursions will explore this range of themes, with visits to the Stour Estuary and Hamford Water. Issues such as salt marsh erosion, dredging, pollution, grazing marsh management, sustainable resource exploitation and visitor management will all be discussed in the context of estuary management plans and global climate change.
The content is appropriate for anyone wishing to contribute to their Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements.
Chris Gibson is Senior Conservation Specialist for Natural England and has spent much of his 26 years in professional nature conservation helping to celebrate and protect the wildlife of the East Anglian coastline.
He has written a guide to coastal wildlife (Pocket Nature: Seashore - Dorling Kindersley 2008) and led several previous courses for the FSC.
‘Huge content delivered in a way that covered key areas. Field trips very good’. Course participant September 2010.
