Early winter is an interesting time to turn our attention to trees. The broad-leaves have transformed our landscapes into a blaze of colour and the conifers stand out in majestic contrast. However, by early December we can no longer rely solely on the foliage and fruits and we have to look to twig formation and silhouettes to help us identify these important members of our natural heritage.
Depending on weather conditions, part of the day will be spent at the Centre sorting through specimens and getting to grips with the terminology of the different shapes of leaves, the features of the bare stems and winter buds and the structure and classification of fruits and cones.
Time will also be spent exploring the local woods and hedgerows in order to put into practice what has been learned.
This course is suitable for beginners and all those who love trees. No previous knowledge will be assumed.
The content is also appropriate for anyone wishing to contribute to their Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements.
Ros Bennett is a freelance botanist and former member of FSC staff with an enthusiasm for this magnificent group of plants.
