The main aim for the course is for participants to learn how to identify lichens. Most folks who know something about them think that lichens are fascinating, but many feel fearful about starting to look at them because of their reputation for being 'difficult'. This course lasts for an entire week, so even if you are a complete beginner, you will have time and opportunity to feel comfortable and gain confidence looking at lichens both in the field and the 'lab'.
The course is taught right from the ground up, but moves on to provide instruction and encouragement to those wanting to improve or expand their expertise. The tutor strives to make the material covered both stimulating and satisfying, and participants will go away feeling they have come to grips with seeing, recognising and understanding lichens a bit better.
The only way to learn identification is to practice, so participants will either be in the field or at the microscopes, learning key characters and, especially, getting familiar with the keys. Apart from identifying lichens, we shall also discuss lichen ecology and conservation, with field trips to some lichen beauty spots.
Rebecca Yahr has been studying lichen evolution, ecology and conservation for 15 years and is currently working at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh.
