Drawing and Painting the Flora at Malham Tarn

Painting and Drawing the Flora of Malham Tarn is a course for anyone with an interest in native flora. Immerse yourself in a close study of the plant world and learn how to record it in a watercolour drawing. Tuition includes a number of exercises aimed at building the speed and accuracy necessary for field work and lessons in colour mixing and paint handling will give even the complete beginner the confidence to produce a successful painting.

Malham Tarn offers a surprising array of habitat - adjacent to the centre there is woodland, pasture and crags. Within short walking distance is a wonderful boardwalk which stretches out across an acid peat bog giving access to an extraordinary range of plants. If you are prepared to scramble uphill, above the centre you will find yourself on a limestone pavement with its associated flora.

Equipped with the basics, you will be free to wander the land around the centre to search out your own subject, or if preferred you can draw from a selection of plants made available in the work room. There will be the opportunity to view details through a microscope allowing you to add those close observations that complete the botanical illustration.

Evening sessions will include a look at the work of Botanical Artists past and present and compare their approaches to this fascinating subject.

Kate Houghton MA started out as a sculptor and it is perhaps this which drives her interest in the structure of plants. She has taken watercolour classes for many years and has experience of teaching all levels of ability.

She has work in the collection of Nottingham University, Plant Sciences. In 2011 she held an exhibition of paintings at the Lancaster Environment Centre.
