Digital cameras have revolutionised our approach to identifying plants, fungi and insects. A range of websites now exist to help people identify these groups through submission of digital images but it is important to be able to record and submit good quality pictures that show the salient features.
You will be shown how to use your digital camera to record good quality images that combine an accurate portrayal of the subject with traditional compositional elements to make pictures that are both visually very satisfying and suitable for identification purposes.
The varied habitats around Malham Tarn provide endless scope for photographing all types of natural history subjects but we will concentrate on the smaller organisms: plants, fungi and insects, rather than on the larger subjects such as birds and mammals.
Robin Sutton, Assistant Head and Senior Ecologist at Malham Tarn Field Centre, is an accomplished naturalist and photographer.
