Field Studies Council: Bringing Environmental Understanding to All

Woodland Conservation and Management

  • Non-Resident: £295
  • Sole Occupancy: £375
  • Shared Room: £335

How a wood is managed affects the wildlife within it, since what favours one species may eliminate another. We will visit a variety of woodland sites to see their different management regimes, and the effect on woodland flora and fauna. As the ability to identify current species is a pre-requisite of management decisions, some time will be devoted to identification of trees, shrubs, woodland plants and other indicator species. This course is aimed at everyone with an interest in the ecology and history of woodland, and the techniques of practical management and conservation.

Jerry Dicker is a working arboricultural consultant with an interest in sustainable woodland and coppice crafts. He is a warden for a community woodland and a voluntary speaker for the Woodland Trust.
