The umbellifer or carrot family (Apiaceae) includes many useful edible plants (including parsley, celery and coriander), ubiquitous roadside verge plants (such as cow parsley and hogweed) and important ecological indicator species (like burnet-saxifrage and cowbane). Because they have similar looking flowers identification can seem daunting. Helpfully the Botanical Society of the British Isles has published a Handbook with useful keys and clear drawings of leaves, flowers and fruits which aid the study of this important family.
This course provides an opportunity to learn more about the species in this major plant family and improve your identification skills.
John Swindells holds the Birmingham University MSc in Biological Recording. He is Chairman of the Wild Flower Society and a Vice-President of the London Natural History Society and has a particular interest in urban wild plants.
