An exciting opportunity to encounter and identify many British mammals through field signs, live-trapping and sightings. The course is practically based with field visits and laboratory sessions designed to introduce a range of detection and identification skills. These include surveys for droppings and footprints, use of bat detectors, owl pellet analysis, identification of feeding signs, examination of museum specimens and, small mammal trapping. Students will gain an insight into designing surveys and recording exercises for mammals and will develop an understanding of aspects of mammal ecology and conservation.

Jackie Underhill is an experienced and enthusiastic trainer who has spent several years carrying out research into UK mammals. She now works as an independent ecological consultant.
