This course aims to give you an insight into methods of estimating population sizes of mobile organisms. We will use a combination of theory and practical sessions. We will start by introducing some background to the theories of population study. Our first practical session will involve examining the local population of newts. We will also use another aquatic animal, an invertebrate as a second study organism.
As part of the course we will provide a spreadsheet tool, developed by the course leaders, which will allow participants to carry out population studies using a variety of methods.
Mark Gardener is an ecologist with a wide range of experience of fieldwork in the UK and abroad. He currently teaches environmental science and data analysis. John Wilkinson is an ecologist with many years experience in herpetology. He currently works as research officer for the Amphibians and Reptiles Conservation Trust.
