Field Studies Council: Bringing Environmental Understanding to All

The Management of Floodplain Meadows

  • Non-Resident: £170
  • Sole Occupancy: £248
  • Shared Room: £228

This is a practical course aimed at professional conservation advisors and site managers responsible for the management or restoration of floodplain meadows. We will explore the latest research on floodplain meadows, get to grips with floodplain meadow soils, and spend a day in the field learning what the plants can tell us about the soils, water regime and management history of the site. Monitoring methods will be discussed and we will practise botanical, hydrological and soil monitoring techniques. We will visit a second site where meadow restoration has been attempted and discuss restoration methods. We will touch on the historical aspects of floodplain meadows and there will be plenty of opportunities to discuss your management and restoration issues with the tutors and other professionals from around the country.

The course will include presentations of case studies and will be tutored by a range of experts all with a strong practical interest in the management and restoration of floodplain meadows.

Sessions will be led by The Floodplain Meadows Partnership.

The Floodplain Meadows Partnership is a consortium of organisations focussing on the research and effective management of these grasslands. Tutors will be drawn from the team - and include professors of botany and educationalists. The organisations sponsorship has enabled a reduced price.
