Field Studies Council: Bringing Environmental Understanding to All

Navigation

  • Non-Resident: £170
  • Shared Room: £179
  • Sole Occupancy: £199

Ever wanted to stride across the mountains confident in your abilities to navigate your way out of trouble if the weather turns bad? This weekend gives you the opportunity to improve existing skills so that you can navigate with confidence. The course follows the National Navigation Award Silver Level syllabus. Basic skills of map-reading and compass work are revised before moving on to more complex skills like walking on a bearing and applying relocation strategies if unsure of your location.

North Wales offers a variety of upland terrains, from rocky mixed ground to open moorland, so that you can feel confident wherever you take to the hills. The course is aimed at people wishing to progress from novice to intermediate level navigation. By the end you should be navigating to Silver Level in the National Navigation Awards Scheme. This scheme provides three levels - bronze, silver and gold - encouraging people to develop their skills in a logical sequence.

Participants should expect to walk up to eight miles in upland terrain each day.

Matt Keyse is a qualified Mountain Leader and a full time tutor at Rhyd-y-creuau. He regularly takes groups into the mountains, he is also a keen climber and is passionate about the environment and natural history.
