The woodlands of South Devon should be at their richest in May - a treasure- trove to explore with a wealth of plants to study and identify, from carpets of spring flowers to the graceful canopies of deciduous trees, now in full leaf and several still bearing catkins or blossom. Many of the freshly unfurled ferns will be bearing sporangia, which will aid identification and there will be many mosses in prime condition and low-hanging willow branches swathed in lichens to entice those who have not yet developed an interest in these groups of attractive plants. There will be plenty of guidance.
This course is focused on identification and designed to give the beginner a basic knowledge of all these groups. To achieve this we shall consider the essential structural details and the terminology used in the scientific keys to identification for each group. We shall spend most days exploring the woodlands of Slapton Ley National Nature Reserve with some excursions further afield. This accredited course is run jointly with the University of Birmingham.

Ros Bennett is a botanist and ecologist. She was formerly a full time tutor at Flatford Mill and then organiser and leader of courses for FSC Overseas. She has written books on flowers and has taught courses on wild flowers to all age groups.
