The coastline has been a constant source of inspiration for artists for hundreds of years and still continues to attract painters to where the land meets the sea. This course aims to provide students, of all levels, with an understanding of how to approach such a subject. Using both drawings and photographs made on location these studies will be used to develop more finished pieces back in the studio. Topics covered will include sketching, information gathering, planning, composition, tone colour and application of paint. Teaching will be through one to one guidance, group exercises and tutor demonstrations.

Rob graduated from Exeter College of Art in 1980 and has been painting ever since. He works almost exclusively in watercolour. Finding the variety of landscapes in Devon particularly inspiring, he spends a great deal of time exploring the different effects of light on moorland and coastal scenes. He records the fleeting changes of light with both sketches and photographs, developing these into more finished works in the studio. He is a regular contributor to The Artist and Illustrators magazine, demonstrates to art groups all over the country and has produced many video demonstrations for Arttutor.com

Rob also enjoys writing. He has worked on a series of scripts for the Emmy winning children’s series; Shaun the Sheep and published his first children’s book in 2012 based on a magical old gardener living in Wales.
