This one day course will provide an introduction to hoverflies, probably the most popular and photogenic of flies. Many of them are common and can be found in gardens and this course will allow you to identify some of those you are most likely to come across. The course will include a mixture of class work and field activities. Please note the venue for this course is the Green Centre in Wat Tyler Country Park. Please bring a packed lunch.

Roger Payne has been interested in studying and recording hoverflies since the 1970s, when he was engaged in an MSc research project on their ecology. On moving to Westcliff in 1980, he worked as natural history curator at Southend Museum where he continued to record hoverflies, particularly in Essex. He is now retired but remains the hoverfly recorder for the Essex Field Club.
