A chance to gain confidence in identifying all the common ferns of hedgebanks, woodlands and walls, and to learn something of their ecology by looking at the communities in which they grow. In the lab, we will look for subtler characters that determine some taxa more precisely.

The island of Cumbrae offers a wide variety of habitats in a small compass, and its climate favours a luxuriant growth of ferns. No previous knowledge will be assumed on this course, which will cater both for beginners and improvers who wish to sharpen up their fern ID skills, while at the same time deepening their understanding of this fascinating group of plants. We will discuss the life-cycle of ferns and the survival strategies adopted by different species. Working mostly in the field, we will combine species recognition with observing the habitat and vegetation communities in which the different ferns grow and their place in the larger ecological context. In the lab, we will use microscopes to observe the subtler details that allow more precise taxonomic identification. Working with fewer than 20 species, you will become very familiar with all the usual ferns of woodland, walls and hedge-banks.
