Ferns and their allies are a fascinating group of plants that initially offer a bewildering diversity of shapes and dividedness, seemingly complicating any hope of identification. Throughout the day emphasis will be placed on the key characters needed to distinguish each species from often similar-looking plants. By the end of the course participants will be able to confidently use the 'Fern Guide' and key out any species they come across. The only requirements for this course are an enthusiasm for plants and moderate walking ability.
Mark Duffell has had a lifetime interest in plants, gaining the RHS Diploma in Horticulture, becoming Young Horticulturist of the Year in 2001 and completing an MSc in Biological Recording. He now runs Arvensis Ecology (www.ArvensisEcology.co.uk), splitting his time between conducting botanical surveys and teaching botanical identification and survey techniques to undergraduates and postgraduates students of universities, consultancies and environmental organisations.
