This three day course is designed to give you a skills base for biological recording in the UK. It is a stand-alone unit which will focus on the skills needed to plan and carry out biological recording in the field and how to present your findings. During the course you will be working on a project (independently or jointly) that is tailored to your particular natural history interests with the support of a tutor; this will provide you with practical and reporting skills. It is designed and delivered by Manchester Metropolitan University as part of the University Certificate in Biological Recording and Species Identification. As such this is the compulsory core unit - which certificate students must take in order to match with their identification unit choices taken across the FSC. There is a blend of lab-based lectures and field work on the Preston Montford Estate to enable participants to develop their own field recording skills and their understanding of biological recording.
Mark Duffell has had a lifetime interest in plants, gaining the RHS Diploma in Horticulture, becoming 'Young Horticulturist of the Year' in 2001 and completing an MSc in Biological Recording. He now runs Arvensis Ecology, splitting his time between conducting botanical surveys and teaching botanical identification and survey techniques to undergraduate and postgraduate students, consultancies and environmental organisations.
This course is part of the Biological Recording programmes run jointly with Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU). There is assessment of learning on the course through, for example, identification tests, producing survey reports or field journals, working through keys and other various pieces of work.
Credits from these assessments contribute towards the University Certificate in Biological Recording and Species Identification and the MSc Biological Recording. To gain University Credits you must register in advance.
