Professor Ian Mercer CBE - Emeritus President of the Field Studies Council
With deep sadness we report the death of Ian on the 19th of September, after a battle with cancer.
Ian was our Emeritus President, and had been our Chairman and then President between 1991 and 2014. Appointed the first Warden of our Slapton Ley Field Centre, Ian rose to become the founding CEO of Dartmoor National Park Authority, and later of the Countryside Council of Wales (successor to the Nature Conservancy Council). Ian chaired several high profile Public Inquiries, was prominent in the National Parks movement, and had an abiding affection for Dartmoor (on which he produced the definitive New Naturalist book bearing that name).
Larger than life, exuberant, richly entertaining, caring, gifted as an orator, and loyal to a vast array of friends, Ian gave unstinting service to the public and charity sectors. We shall produce a full tribute in due course, but now have Pam and the rest of Ian’s family in our thoughts.
