Field Studies Council: Bringing Environmental Understanding to All

When does spring start in 2018?

There are several dates around for when spring officially starts including the spring equinox on 20th or 21st March, and 1st March which the Met Office use. Many of us look out for our own certain signs to tell us when we feel like it’s spring!

The UK Government does have an official UK Spring Index, which looks for four signs in nature and then averages the first dates they are seen to calculate when spring starts.

After this colder winter we are now busy looking out for these indicators and would like to invite you to help us map when spring really starts this year.

Download the four signs of spring and the form here.

Spring 1 Spring 2

Please look out for these spring signs and return your completed form to us at [email protected].

We will then share the results later in the year. We mapped the arrival of spring 2016 with this video map.

If you are interested in learning more or recording other sighting take a look at Nature’s Calendar from the Woodland Trust.
