AQA
AS| A2 | Combined AS/A2
These courses have been specifically developed for those studying AS and A2 geography following the AQA specification to enable teachers to quickly and easily book a residential fieldtrip, safe in the knowledge that it will be directly related to work taught in the classroom and will contribute to achieving AQA specification requirements.
Achieving AQA AS specification requirements
At AS, students will carry out fieldwork to collect case-study material for Unit 1 (Physical and Human Geography) and to develop the skills that are assessed at Unit 2 (Geographical Skills). Unit 2 is a 1 hour exam based on the content of Unit 1 with two questions (both compulsory): a resource-based question and a second question based specifically on the student's own fieldwork. We aim on AS courses to prepare students to answer that fieldwork question effectively.
There is considerable evidence that a fieldwork trip is a highlight of student's geography A-level. Therefore, offering a fieldwork experience at AS level may increase recruitment to A2 level.
Geography Skills, 5 days5 day
This course prepares students for 3 out of 4 questions in the Unit 1 exam and both questions in the Unit 2 exam. (The final Unit 1 question does not involve fieldwork).
- Rivers: Investigating downstream changes. Designed to prepare students for Unit 2 fieldwork question as well as content within Unit 1.
- Human Environments: A field investigation of either an inner city area or a rural/urban fringe or a rural settlement. A case-study for a core Unit 1 topic.
- Physical Option: A field investigation in either a coastal environment or a cold environment. A case-study for the Unit 1 physical options.
- Flooding and Management. A case-study for a core Unit 1 topic exploring the causes and impacts of flooding.

- Human Environments: a field investigation of either an urban area or a rural/urban fringe or a rural settlement. A core Unit 1 case-study within the Population Change section.
Applied Skills in Physical Environments3 day
- Rivers: Investigating downstream changes. Designed to prepare students for Unit 2 fieldwork question as well as content within Unit 1.
- Physical Option: A field investigation in either a Coastal Environment or a Cold Environment. A case-study for the Physical Options of Unit 1.
Applied Skills in Physical Environments (River Environments)1 day
Students carry out an investigation on changing channel characteristics with distance downstream and consider how variables interrelate. By the end of the river investigation all students will have developed river fieldwork skills and have used different methods to collect data. This study will explicitly aim to prepare students for the AS Geographical Skills Paper - Unit 2 (Geog2).

Achieving AQA A2 specification requirements
At A2, students will carry out fieldwork to collect case-study material for Unit 3 (Contemporary Geographical Issues) and for Unit 4A (Geographical Fieldwork Investigation). Unit 4A is assessed in a 1.5 hour exam, which may include questions on any stage of the fieldwork investigation process.
Geography Fieldwork Investigations, 5 days5 day
This course prepares students for 3 out of 4 questions in the Unit 1 exam and both questions in the Unit 2 exam. (The final Unit 1 question does not involve fieldwork).
- Ecosystems: succession. A field investigation of vegetation, soil and micro-climate along a transect. Preparation for Unit 4A.
- Urban Decline and Regeneration. A field investigation of environmental quality, deprivation and regeneration in an urban area. A case-study for a unit 3 human option (World cities).
- Global Climate Change. A case-study for a Unit 3 physical option (Weather and climate and associated hazards).
- Retailing and other services. A case-study for a unit 3 human option (World cities).

Succession, Fieldwork Investigations1 day
Students carry out an investigation across a succession ecosystem, sampling along a transect to collect data on vegetation, soil and micro-climate. Students explore how the environment is changing over time, preparing students for the Geographical Fieldwork Investigations Paper at A2.
