Advanced Higher

FSC has developed specific courses for those studying Advanced Higher Biology to enable teachers to quickly and easily book a fieldtrip, safe in the knowledge that it will be directly related to work taught in the classroom and will contribute to achieving SQA Arrangement requirements.

Environmental Biology, 3 days3 day

This three day course is designed to meet the needs of the Environmental Biology module, and will cover many of the fieldwork techniques that students will need to master for their examination.

  • Biological sampling methods
  • Data collection using a range of fieldwork techniques
  • Analysis and presentation of data
  • Investigations into soils, hydroseral succession, freshwater pollution, exotic species and conservation

Environmental Biology, 5 days5 day

This five day course is designed to meet the needs of designed to meet the needs of the Environmental Biology module. This longer course covers the same content as the three day course, but enables students to gain further experience in fieldwork and to experience a wider range of habitats and organisms.

  • Data collection using a range of fieldwork techniques
  • Analysis and presentation of data
  • Investigations into freshwater pollution, succession of a hydrosere, grassland grazing and exotic species

Biology Investigations3 day

This three day course is designed to meet the needs of the 'Biological Investigation' module, it covers the planning and collection of information through survey work that students have to master for their examination.

Investigations in Environmental Biology5 day

This five day course is designed to meet the needs of both the 'Environmental Biology' and 'Biology Investigation' modules of the Advanced Higher syllabus.

  • Biological fieldwork techniques and sampling
  • Project planning techniques
  • Investigations into freshwater pollution, succession of a hydrosere
  • Visit to an organic farming and conservation project
  • Small mammal identification
  • Completion of a personal fieldwork project
