Standard Grade
Experience shows that fieldwork can play a vital part in enthusing Standard Grade students. Its 'hands on' approach supports their understanding of geography with case studies, while also developing their enquiry skills. this helps students maximise their performance in Standard Grade coursework, and examinations.
As well as covering specific elements of the Course Arrangements, courses also place a strong emphasis on developing core skills and informed attitudes, with an opportunity to participate in activities relating to enterprise, health, well being, and citizenship.
Physical Environments3 day
This three day course focuses on the Physical Environment and Human Environment units of the arrangement.
- Introduction to geographical investigation and sampling methods
- Data collection using a range of fieldwork techniques and equipment - observation, measurement and recording
- Analysis, presentation and interpretation of data
- Rivers and flooding
- Weather and Climate
- Upland glaciated landscapes
- Team building and problem solving activities such as ropes challenges and orienteering.
Physical and Human Environments5 day
This five day course focuses both the Physical Environment and Human Environment units of the arrangement. This longer course covers similar content to the above course, but in more depth. A greater range of techniques may be covered, and presented within a broader set of contexts, including human geography options:
- River dynamics and flooding
- Weather and Climate
- Upland glaciated landscapes
- Rural Settlement - retail/tourism
- Rural Land Use
- Team building and problem solving activities such as ropes challenges and orienteering.
