FSC has developed specific courses for those studying Higher managing environmental resources to enable teachers to quickly and easily book a fieldtrip, safe in the knowledge that it will be directly related to work taught in the classroom and will contribute to achieving SQA Arrangement requirements.

Investigating Ecosystems3 day

This three day course focuses on Unit 2 Investigating Ecosystems in the National Unit Specification and includes:

  • Biological sampling methods, fieldwork techniques and using identification keys
  • Investigations into terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems (your choice)  and dynamics - habitat, communities, niche, biodiversity, biomass,
  • Looking at factors affecting frequency and distribution of species - abiotic/biotic factors, adaptation and competition
  • Data collection, analysis and presentation

Investigating Ecosystems and Land Use5 day

This five day course focuses on the Ecosystems and Land Use in Scotland unitsand includes:

  • Biological sampling methods, fieldwork techniques and using identification keys
  • Investigations into freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems - abiotic and biotic factors; energy dynamics and food webs
  • Investigation of soils - processes and profiles
  • Investigations into land use and associated issues - uplands and high mountains: skiing/tourism/conservation
  • Carrying out an Environmental Impact Assessment and making a presentation promoting a land management plan
  • Data collection, analysis and presentation
