Photosynthesis in sun and shade

Summary of the investigation

Several species of plants which grow in Gordon and Woburn Squares show clear morphological differences between leaves which grow in full sunlight and leaves which grow in shade. In this investigation, students sample sun and shade shoots of stinging nettle and consider differences in leaf size and internode length.

Full support is given for pre-visit work at school, data collection in the field, and post-visit work at school to put the fieldwork in its wider context. Extensive teacher guidance, with PowerPoint presentations, a full sample risk assessment and detailed plan of a sequence of lessons, are also available for download.
