Why do pollution levels vary on Hackney Marshes?

Hackney Marshes

Summary of the investigation

In this investigation, pupils use simple equipment to take rapid measurements of particulate pollution along a belt transect to assess the extent to which vehicle emissions are dispersed with distance from the main road. The pupils' sample the trees for particulates using sticky tape and random sampling techniques are used in the laboratory to analysis it. Sound sensors may also be used along the transect to collect supporting/ alternative data. Pupils could use the data collected to argue where the most suitable sites for outdoor refreshment facilities on the Marshes. Secondary data may also be considered.

Full support is given for pre-visit work at school, data collection in the field and post-visit work at school to put the fieldwork in to a wider context. Extensive teacher guidance, with PowerPoint presentations, a full sample risk assessment and detailed plan of a possible lesson sequence, are also available to download.
