Comparing freshwater habitats at Waterlow Park

Waterlow Park

Summary of the investigation

In this investigation, pupils use pond nets to take samples of invertebrates living in three micro-habitats within the ponds at Waterloo Park. After identifying the animals they have found, they construct food webs and pyramids of numbers, before using this information to explain how pollution and other environmental changes would affect the biodiversity of the habitats that they have studied.

Full support is given for pre-visit work at school, data collection in the field, and post-visit work at school to put the fieldwork in its wider context. Extensive teacher guidance, with PowerPoint presentations, a full sample risk assessment and detailed plan of a sequence of lessons, are also available for download.
