In this investigation, students use quadrats to sample the changes in species diversity and abiotic factors along a line transect from a shaded area of grassland into an open field. They use this information to consider the wider problem of the management of areas for biodiversity in times of drought whilst considering specific plant adaptations.
Full support is given for pre-visit work at school, data collection in the field, and post-visit work at school to put the fieldwork in its wider context. Extensive teacher guidance, with PowerPoint presentations, a full sample risk assessment and detailed plan of a sequence of lessons, are also available for download.
