Mile End Ecology Park West Reservoir Kenwood

Investigating air pollution

Using nothing more expensive than sticky tape, pupils can take measurements of particulate pollution and investigate how pollution levels vary with distance from the source.

Full materials have been developed for sites at Hampstead Heath, Hackney Marshes, Gordon Square and Mile End Ecology Park.

Investigating freshwater habitats

Freshwater habitats are valuable for their range of micro-habitats and can readily be investigated for the effects of human activity.

Full materials have been developed for sites at Mile End Ecology Park, Waterlow Park, Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park and West Reservoir.

Investigating grassland habitats

Grassland is a superb habitat for developing pupils' understanding of How Science Works. Simple home-made equipment can be used to investigate a range of human and environmental factors.

Full materials have been developed for sites at Hackney Marshes, Gordon Square and Waterlow Park.

Feeding relationships: the holly leaf-miner food chain

The holly leaf-miner food chain provides an opportunity for pupils to collect quantitative data on the size of populations at different trophic levels.

Full materials have been developed for sites at Hampstead Heath, Hackney Marshes, Gordon Square, Waterlow Park and Mile End Ecology Park.

Biodiversity

Pupils use sweep netting to sample invertebrate biodiversity in the two types of tree.

Full materials have been developed for Gordon Square.

Photosynthesis

Using simple equipment, pupils sample sun and shade shoots of stinging nettle and consider differences in leaf size and internode length.

Full materials have been developed for Gordon Square.

Trampling

Students investigate the effects of trampling on the distribution of grassland plants.

Full materials have been developed for Gordon Square
